    Personal Profile

    Tao XuProfessor and PhD Supervisor at the School of Resources and Civil Engineering, Northeastern University, China. He has been recognized as a Leading Talent in Science and Technology by the Ministry of Natural Resources of China. His research focuses on rock mechanics and rock engineering related to slope stability, underground excavation and mining. He holds a number of academic appointments in major national and international professional societies. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Technical Committee on Discontinuous Deformation Analysis of Rock and Soil of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering (CSRME), Deputy Secretary-General of the CSRME International Exchange Committee, and a member of the ISRM Commission on Rock Mechanics at Extreme Conditions (Commission – Beyond Limits), among other professional roles.

    He is also actively involved in international academic publishing. He serves as an Associate Editor of Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering and Geomatics, Natural Hazards and Risk, and as an Editorial Board Member or Editor for Computers and Geotechnics, Geomechanics and Geophysics for Geo-energy and Geo-resources, International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, Archives of Mining Sciences, and Innovative Infrastructure Solutions. In China, he serves on the editorial boards of the EI-indexed Journal of Mining and Strata Control Engineering and the Journal of Disaster Prevention and Reduction. He has also served as an international reviewer for major research funding agencies, including the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Czech Science Foundation (GACR). He has led and participated in numerous major national and international research projects funded by the National Key R&D Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and other national research programs. He has also led extensive international collaborative projects with researchers in Switzerland, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Australia, and has participated in the Horizon Europe Framework Programme and other major collaborative research initiatives.

    His research achievements have received a range of national, provincial, and professional awards, including science and technology awards from the Ministry of Education of China, the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering, and the Liaoning Provincial Government. He has extensive international research experience and has received several prestigious scholarships and international research awards, including the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship and the Australian Endeavour Scholarship/Fellowship. He has conducted collaborative research at leading universities and research institutions, including EPFL, Monash University, University of Melbourne, University College London, University of Strasbourg, Graz University of Technology, and The University of Tokyo. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in leading international journals in rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, and related fields, and has co-authored three academic monographs. He has been included in the Stanford University–Elsevier World's Top 2% Scientists list and has been recognized among the world's leading scientists in Earth Sciences in 2026.
