Professor Wancheng Zhu obtained his BSc. in Mining Engineering in 1995, MSc. in Engineering Mechanics in 1998 and PhD in Mining Engineering in 2001 from Northeastern University, China, respectively. Professor Wancheng Zhu is currently a faculty member at the Department of Mining Engineering, School of Resource and Civil Engineering at the Northeastern University, specializing in rock mechanic and mining engineering. In the past 10 years, He has worked in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a research assistant, in the University of Western Australia as the visiting postdoctoral fellow and in Ruhr University-Bochum as an Alexander Von Humboldt Research Fellow, respectively. He has given lectures and presentations at many universities throughout the China, Australia, Germany, Korea, Switzerland, UK and South Africa. Professor Zhu is a member of International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), an executive member of Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME), and is the vice chief and member of three branch institutions of CSRME.
Professor Zhu has extensive experience on a range of rock projects. His research interests include rock damage and failure, rock dynamics and the coupled multiphysics in rock mechanics. He was the CI (chief investigator) of more than 30 research projects supported by National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), National Basic Research Program (‘973 program’) and International Science and Technology Cooperation Programme supported by Ministry of Science and Technology China (MOST), etc. He is the co-author of 3 books and over 200 technical papers (in English or in Chinese) in conferences and journals, including “International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences”, “Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering”, “Transport in Porous Media”, “Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology”, and “Environmental Earth Sciences”, in which 72 of them are cited by SCI-E, and 165 of them are cited in EI Compendex. The highest SCI impact factor (IF) of a single paper is 3.566. His publications have been cited over 4700 times. From the SCI database, it is found that his papers are cited for more than 700 times, and Professor Zhu published over 40 papers as the first or corresponding author.
He earned numerous awards and honors such as one second-class National Scientific and Technological Progress Award of China (Rank 2) in 2004, 14 Natural Science Awards (Rank 1, 3, or 4) or Scientific and Technological Progress Awards (either at ministerial and provincial level, rank 3 or 4), granted by Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province government, or Chinese Association of Metallurgy. There were 3 authorized national invention patents (Rank 4 or 5) and 4 registered computer software (Rank 1). Dr. Zhu was supported by Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University of China (NCET) and was nominated as the Key Teacher of High Universities in Liaoning Province in 2006, was awarded as the Liaoning Youth Scientific and Technological Award in 2007. In 2009, he was nominated as National level expert of the “New Century National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talent Project in New Century of China” by Ministry of Human Resources and Society Security of China, and was granted the Young Teacher Award and was supported by the application project by the Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation of China. In 2010, He was awarded as the Excellent Scientific and Technological Workers Awards by Liaoning Association of Science and Technology. In 2011 he was awarded the Shenyang May 4th Media. In 2012 he was granted the Excellent Youth Science and Technology Fund by National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and was selected to receive the State Council Special Allowance. In 2013 he was granted the China Youth Science and Technology Award by the China Association of Science and Technology. In 2014, he was awarded the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Research Fellow. In 2015, he was awarded the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China and was entitled as “Cheung Kong Scholar” Chair Professor. In 2016 he was selected the Young Scientific and Technological Innovation Leader by Ministry of Science and Technology, and was also elected as representative of People’s Congress of Liaoning Province; in 2017, he was selected as the Young Scientific and Technological Innovation Leader under the “Ten Thousand Talents” program of China Government, and was also selected as the Liaoning Province Outstanding Scientist by Liaoning Provincial Government; and in 2018 he was awarded the Jindeng Award by the HBIS Company Limited.
