Personal Profile

Prof. Dr. Rudai Shan is Secretary-General of the Digital Design and Construction Professional Committee of the Liaoning Society of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and an Associate Professor and graduate supervisor at Jangho Architecture College, Northeastern University. She earned a master's degree and a PhD from the University of Michigan and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research there.

Her research focuses on embodied intelligence and construction robotics. During doctoral research on climate-adaptive building envelopes, she developed a genetic algorithm-based hierarchical optimization method, Adaptive Radiation, integrating simulations of optical and thermal processes in buildings with computational optimization. Building on this foundation, the research has progressively expanded to investigate how physical conditions in the built environment affect robotic perception and safe action.

Prof. Dr. Shan has led and completed numerous national, provincial, and municipal research projects, including a Young Scientists Fund project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, a subproject under China's National Key R&D Program during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, and projects supported by the Liaoning Provincial Natural Science Foundation, the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Liaoning Province, and the Shenyang Science and Technology Plan.

Prof. Dr. Shan serves as a reviewer for international journals including Automation in Construction, Advanced Engineering Informatics, Energy and Buildings, and Journal of Building Engineering, and has presented research at international academic conferences in the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, and other countries and regions.

From 2017 to 2022, Prof. Dr. Shan served as Head of the Building Technology Research Department at Country Garden Group headquarters and as Director of Building Technology at China Construction Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd. The work focused on product systems for passive ultra-low-energy prefabricated buildings, near-zero-energy modular shelter systems for remote regions (modular units for Leishenshan and Huoshenshan hospitals and Antarctic research stations), construction robotics applications, and construction technology research and engineering practice. With a longstanding focus on integrating artificial intelligence with real-world building and construction applications, she has conducted research and engineering work across multiple climate zones in China, as well as field studies and technical visits in more than 200 cities across over 40 countries in Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and other regions.
