Dr. Tao XU is professor in rock mechanics at Northeastern University in China. Dr. Xu obtained his PhD at Northeastern University, Shenyang, China in 2005 and his research focuses on the time-dependent deformation and fracturing of brittle rocks, associated long-term stability of rock slope, thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling process of rock mass, coal and gas outbursts. He is acting as Vice Secretary-general of Commission for International Outreach and Collaboration, Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME); Executive Council Member of Northeastern Branch-CSRME, Vice-Chairman of Commission for Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA)-CSRME, Committee Member of Commission for Rock Fragmentation-CSRME, Vice-Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Teaching Mechanics to Majors in Liaoning Province, Chairman of Professors Committee of the Department of Mining Engineering at Northeastern University, Associate Editor of the Journal of Geomatics Natural Hazards and Risk, Editorial Member of Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, Editorial Member of Geomechanics and Geophysics for Geo-energy and Geo-Resources, etc. He is in charge of nine research grants funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, five high-end foreign researhers projects funded by MOST as principal investigator, five research projects funded by MOE as principal investigator, two National Key Research and Development Programs and two National Basic Research Programs of China (973 Program) as co-investigator. He has ever academically visited City University of Hong Kong, EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland, Monash University in Australia, University of Melbourne in Australia, University of Strasbourg in France, University College London in UK, and TU Graz in Austria. Tao is actively participating in professional activities, acting as an assessor of National Natural Science Foundation of China, China Scholarship Council (CSC), Australian Research Council (ARC), Cezch Science Foundation (GACR), some provincial and ministerial science and technological awards, Tao has also ever been acted as panel assessors for NSFC Key Programmes, and National Key Research and Development Programs (MOST). Tao was awarded Silver Award for Youth Science and Technology Award, CSRME in 2014, nominated the national excellent doctoral thesis, China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center in 2007 and shortlist for excellent doctoral thesis award Rocha Award 2006 of International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM). He has authored over 100 international journal papers and co-authored three monographs.
